September’s fitness challenge was 100 burpees for time because, who doesn’t love burpees? As it turns out: a lot of people. But the members of CrossFit Four Peaks stepped up to the challenge anyways. Winning the men’s division with a time of 7:09 was Doren Sinyella. Taking the women’s win and best overall time was Julia Sumler with a jaw-dropping 6:54!

Tim and Lisa Loving


 1. Tell us a little bit about yourself:
My name is Lisa Loving and my husband is Tim Loving. We are both dentists and we have a dental practice in Fountain Hills, Loving Family Dental. We have 3 adult children that all went to school  and grew up in Fountain Hills. Tim is from the Pacific Northwest where we met decades ago. We are old.

2. When did you start CrossFit and how has CrossFit changed your life,
lifestyle and level of fitness?

 We started crossfit in 2014. Tim is the “ideas guy” in our relationship and had seen something about crossfit in the news. Then he saw that crossfit four peaks was opening a box right behind our office so it was the perfect opportunity to try it out. He was seeking a new challenge or two. I, of course, thought why not. Having NOT investigated what crossfit was, I had NO idea what I was getting myself into.  My level of fitness was essentially running to PTO meetings , running between patients, an occasional hike. I definitely had never lifted weights or been a gym rat. ( although I paid for a lot of memberships to make me feel good).  Tim had taken up cycling (road bikes ) for a year. Did Cycle Oregon. Conquered sailing navigation lessons, was a little better at getting to the gym… we were both motivated to make changes in our life.
 Since we joined crossfit four peaks and met so many like minded people, we have become regular with getting to the box. we have felt stronger and more apt to consider doing other things that we probably would have never considered.  By no means am I a beast of an athlete. but I love competing against myself. I don’t lift heavy but most women my age don’t lift. It’s a mindset. Tim loves it for the same reasons. Our goal is to make it to the box and stay off the sofa for that hour.  We feel better.. albeit some days a little beat up… I

3. What is your favorite thing about CrossFit? Favorite Lift and WOD?

Our favorite thing about crossfit was the people, hands down. We still talk about this. There were people of all ages and levels of fitness. 
We love doing the Crossfit Open every year and of course, Murph. 
Crossfit Open because it gives us a good perspective of how we are doing comparatively to other people in our bracket and my goal is to not be at the very bottom.
Murph because anyone in crossfit everywhere you go knows Murph. It’s the WOD that celebrates our veterans and their sacrifices. It’s also a day that brings everyone together. My relatives that crossfit will call or text times and it’s made memorial day another great holiday for us.
Our favorite lift:  thruster for me.  I learned them when Janell talked me into doing a competition and I thought , “why not” . I had to learn how to do a thruster for the competition. Again , not sure what I was thinking but it what another example of things you can accomplish in a motivating group.
For Tim, I’m not sure. what comes to mind is backsquats.  He of course found smoloff online and decided he needed a special challenge. For months he did a progressive backsquat regimen, by himself,  with Andrews guidance to get to a max PR backsquat. Additionally he joined us for the WOD.
Favorite thing about crossfit is that you feel good about yourself and you stop limiting yourself in what you think you are capable of doing. You tear down barriers. You run a 5 k obstacle run for fun or you run a Spartan if you are really crazy Lo
4. What was your biggest challenge when you started and what tips can
you give new members?

Getting to the box regularly, even when you are sore. You’ll stretch out and feel better after the WOD.

Just remember “RX ” is merely a suggestion.

Don’t look at the WOD ahead of time. Just go.

Gabriela Balderas


1. Tell us a little bit about yourself: (Name, occupation, family, where you are from, etc…)

My name is Gabriela Balderas, I am an accountant for the Wekopa Resort. I am from Fort McDowell, AZ. I have two brothers, my mom is Verna (CF4P Member) and a fiancé named Charles. My mother in law Melinda is also a CF4P member.

2. When did you start CrossFit and how has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle and level of fitness?

I remember doing something similar to CrossFit at the Parks and Recreation with Andrew and the Fire Dept. Then soon after that Andrew and Cyndi opened the box, so ever since then. CrossFit has made me stronger and confident, before I just I had no clue how to Olympic lift or do a pull-up, even though CrossFit kicked my butt every day I still showed up. It was because I enjoyed the WODs etc, but it was the members in our box you all make my day, I like the support and family we have created at Crossfit Four Peaks. It’s like my second family, the CrossFit community is amazing.

3. What is your favorite thing about CrossFit? Favorite lift and WOD?

My favorite thing about CrossFit is the variety and how its not so structured, you know what you have to work on and you know what you have to do in order to make gains and PR’s, you know yourself. But I also like how you can die one day but still survive, you suck it up. My favorite lift has to be the clean and jerk and snatch, I used to like dead lifts but it kills my back. I dislike burpees, rowing, pull-ups and thrusters/clusters. Favorite WOD; Grace or DT.

4. What was your biggest challenge when you started and what timps can you give new members?

Biggest challenge when I first started was everything, I’ve never touched a barbell before, never done a pull up or double unders. After my first open; I learned double unders, pull ups and chest to bars, I think I did my first HSPU too, what I’ve learned is don’t let any skill beat you, keep working on it until you get better. Trust the process, especially in lifts. You train hard, push yourself, show up every day and it teaches you about yourself.

Shaun McGilbary


1.  Name is Shaun McGilbary.  Native American (¼ Kiowa, ¼ Creek, ½ Navajo) Originally from Oklahoma, moved out to Arizona in 2004 after college. I work at Fort McDowell Casino as a Surveillance Technician.
2.  I started crossfit in 2015 a little after CF4P opened.  Been at it ever since, keeping me active and healthy.  I was probably in the worst shape of my life when I joined.  Now, I am lifting heavier weight than I ever have.
3.  The daily challenge, and community.  Favorite lift’s are front squat / squat clean / bench.
4.  I knew after my first WOD that it’s wouldn’t be easy to get where I wanted.  Everyday is a different challenge.  I would tell people to trust the process and you will reach your goals, all you have to do is show up and give it your best.  Support will be all around you.
5.  I’m a proud father of 4 (3 girls and 1 boy) .  I have an older sister and brother and a younger brother.    Many nieces and nephews.  Family first.

Doren Sinyella



What’s up? My name is Doren Sinyella, I work for The Wekopa golf resort and I workout at CrossFit Four Peaks. I am from Peach Springs, Arizona but reside on the Fort McDowell Indian Reservation where I live with my family: Rosemary Pattea, my twins Tayler and Tyler, my daughter Nora and also my step daughter Faye. I also have an older daughter Tiawna.

I started CrossFit about 2.5 years ago, right after I lost my father. I always played sports to free my mind of hard times growing up. So I figured I could do the same with CrossFit. I love to workout, and am very competitive. I’ve always been an athlete and CrossFit was very comfortable to me or seemed fun to me. Most of all, I love how CrossFit allows me to be able to chase and play with my kids since all our movements are built toward everday movements.

Some of my favorite lifts include cleans, front squats, and snatches.

If anyone is reading this and wants to try CrossFit my biggest advice would be to take a chance and try it. Not going to lie, you will be very sore but it is only because you will use muscles you haven’t used in a while. CrossFit never really gets any easier if you are trying to get stronger and better but you do adapt to it.

One thing people may not know about me??? I used to be a fitness instructor for a diabetes prevention program for the tribe I grew up with (HUALAPAI). I use to love getting people active or even just giving them a little push when they thought they couldn’t workout any more. It was always amazing to see what physical activity did for people’s confidence.

Julia Sumler



My name is Julia Sumler. I’m newly married as of March 2016. I grew up here in Fountain Hills. I live with my husband and our 2 dogs. I work in Mesa as a 1st grade teacher. This is my 11th year teaching!

I started CrossFit in November of 2015. CrossFit has made me stronger than I ever imagined. I workout 5-6 times every week. I hate having to miss a workout! I have even competed in a few local CrossFit competitions!

My favorite thing about CrossFit is the mindset of everyone at the box. We all come together and cheer each other on. It’s a team effort! I love that the WOD isn’t done until everyone is done. We look out for each other like family! My favorite lift is the deadlift and my favorite WOD is “Grace”

My biggest challenge when I started was learning all the acronyms and the lifts. My biggest tip for a new member would be to look up the acronyms and lifts online to get a good idea of what it looks like until you feel like you know them.

Something people should know about me is that I love a good challenge!! Bring it on!
